“Both daughters (Stoops’ sisters) have had successful careers, all four boys are in college coaching, three have run their own major programs. Bob, Mike and Mark all have national title rings as assistants, and Bob as head coach at Oklahoma.”

– Kyle Tucker, Louisville Courier-Journal

IF ONE COUD SAY that a person is “born” for a certain occupation, it could certainly be said that Mark Stoops was born to coach football.

One of Mark’s most precious childhood memories is sitting with his father, high school coach Ron Stoops Sr., at the family kitchen table, watching film while using the refrigerator as the video screen. As a child, Mark happily recalls following his father and three older brothers around the field, learning the game while bonding with his family.

Each of the brothers played for Ron Sr. at Cardinal Mooney High School in the football hotbed of Youngstown, Ohio. It seemed natural to follow in their father’s footsteps and all four of the Stoops brothers entered the coaching field.

The eldest brother, Ron Stoops Jr., is currently the linebackers coach at Youngstown State. Bob Stoops, head coach at the University of Oklahoma since 1999, has won a national championship with the Sooners and been named National Coach of Year. Mike Stoops is the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma.  Previously, Mike was head coach at Arizona, taking the Wildcats to three bowl games.

Mark, after playing at the University of Iowa, stayed on as a graduate assistant coach to begin his career on the sidelines.  After four years as a high school coach, he returned to the collegiate ranks by coaching defensive backs at South Florida, Wyoming, Houston and Miami (Fla.), including a national championship season with the Hurricanes. Mark was defensive coordinator for brother Mike at Arizona before moving on to become defensive coordinator at Florida State, helping both Arizona and FSU to dramatic improvements in the national defensive rankings.

While the Stoops coaching clan has spread around the country, they fondly remember their start – the gentle whir of a film projector on a kitchen table in Youngstown.
